School Spirit Items – Fun and Fundraising

We all remember school spirit items playing a major role at all of the school sports games. Remember being at the middle school and high school sports games and the cheerleaders throwing team spirit items up in to the stands? How fun was that! There was nothing like carrying the little 6” plastic footballs, basketballs, or volleyballs home. The sports balls were always custom printed with the school name and mascot on it. Local businesses got involved and sponsored the spirit products. The business name would be on one side of the spirit item and the school and mascot would be on the other. What a great way to show spirit and for small businesses to support the community. It was also a very successful way for the businesses to advertise and get their message out in the local community. It is fun and beneficial for all!

Typically a promotional company or the team’s booster club would get permission from the athletic director to solicit the local businesses to get them to advertise and sponsor the school spirit items. Once permission was granted, the local businesses are called or personally visited and the offer was made. Sometimes businesses could go in together and sponsor one item and share the cost given there was enough advertising space for the businesses and the team. Co-op with several businesses was typically reserved for the larger items such as popcorn megaphones, stadium cups, #1 foam hand mitts, foam hand shakers, and stadium seat cushions. The smaller items, such as coupon pop-out pom poms and sports balls advertise one sole business and the school’s name and mascot.

Some products are given away at sports functions to help garner school spirit and excitement. Others are sold as a fundraiser to help buy needs for the team or school. The spirit items that were sold were either sold at the concession stands. Stadium cups sold with the purchase of a drink. Popcorn megaphones sold popcorn filled. The spirit giveaways were typically the famous sports balls! Some school even launched a few t shirts in to the crowd. Who doesn’t want a T Shirt!
